Plantain is a favoured food of herbivores such as sheep, and also many pets such as tortoises, rabbits, guinea pigs, gerbils, hamsters, and mice, amongst others.
Ribwort Plantain is an ideal continuous feed for tortoises. For rabbits and other small pets, it should constitute a portion of their daily "greens" quota.
It is a highly nutritious leafy green for your pets as it is high in fibre and aids digestion. Ribwort Plantain is a perennial low-lying plant which is native to Europe, including the UK, where it grows well from seed, and especially in grassy areas, which is why you often see it in lawns, parks and meadows. It can grow in abundance if allowed to do so, and will bring fresh greens throughout the whole growing season year after year. So if you want a ready supply of plantain, why not grow your own?
Our 10mg packets contain approximately 1200 seeds, which we harvest ourselves from our own organic plot, before drying them ready for packaging. As Ribwort Plantain grows stronger and taller when in competition with other plants (particularly grass) we recommend sowing it in clusters in flower beds or pots, or simply sprinkle them over grassy areas where the grass is allowed to grow taller.
The best time to sow is from late February until the end of August, although you can sow your seeds at any time of the year. But do bear in mind that seeds which are sown when it is late in the growing season will take longer to establish, and probably won’t flower until the following summer.
Instructions
- Ideal sowing season: March – late August
- Soil: Non-preferential – it will grow happily in sandy or clay-rich soil
- Position: Sun – partial shade
- Germination: 7-21 days
- Watering: Prefers moist soil, but can tolerate some aridity. Being dry for too long will cause the plant to shrink down in size.
- Flowers: May – August
- Harvest: After at least 60 days from sowing - harvest leaves from the base first to allow young shoots to grow from the centre
- Height: can grow to over 30cm if in competion with other plants, flower spikes can reach upwards of 50cm
