Red Clover is a perennial low-lying plant which is native to Europe, including the UK. It grows well in sunny grassy areas, which is why you often see it in lawns and along grassy road-sides. The fluffy dark mauve flowers are loved by pollinators such as bees, butterflies, hoverflies, moths and beetles.

Red Clover leaves and flowers make a tasty occasional addition to the greens diet of rabbits, guinea pigs and other small pets, as well as in moderation for tortoises.

These packets contain half a gramme of seeds, which is approximately 250 seeds.

Germination rate is improved by either soaking the seeds for 4-6 hours (or overnight) to soften the outer skins, or by lightly rubbing the seeds between 2 sheets of sandpaper (known as scarification) to help break down the tough outer skins.

If you want to introduce it into a grassy area and give the seeds some protection from wildlife, first use a fork or an aerator to poke shallow (1cm) holes into the soil and then sprinkle the seeds gently over the aerated area before patting the grass down gently with your hand or foot to cover the seeds. You can also start your seedlings in a propagator or greenhouse before planting them out in the Spring.
